How to kill bed bugs
Do you have bed bugs?
Learn the best way to eliminate them
Are you experiencing a bed bug problem in your home? Are you tired of using bug sprays and other pesticides that don't work? Well, don't worry. There is a good solution to eliminating bed bugs, and the best part is it costs less than using pesticides. The best way to kill bed bugs is to use Diatomaceous earth (also known as: DE).
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are annoying insects that suck human blood and leave bite marks. The good news is they are not known to transmit diseases, however, the bad news is they can make a person's life a living hell. If left untreated, a bed but infestation can literally run out of control and the person who lives here can suffer psychological harm. If you have a bed bug problem, you should tackle it immediately before it gets out of control.
What is Diatomaceous earth?
Diatomaceous earth is a natural white powder that has many uses, including the effective use of killing bed bugs. Diatomaceous earth is a natural material found in our planet, and when it is broken down in powder form, it is useful for killing insects including bed bugs.
Diatomaceous earth is also cheap when compared to hiring an expensive pest control professional. You can easily purchase Diatomaceous earth online, in your local Home Depot or other hardware store. For under $20, you can purchase this product and start the process of eliminating bed bugs from your home.
Why not use pesticides like Raid?
If you desire, you can also purchased insect sprays like Raid and use this to kill bed bugs. However, from my personal experience, I actually found the Diatomaceous earth to be more effective, cheaper and safer to use. Pesticides have negative side effects and harmful chemicals which can harm humans with prolong use. On the other hand, Diatomaceous earth is a natural material found in our planet, and is not harmful at all.
Why not hire a professional Pest Control Expert?
You can always hire a professional Pest Control Expert if the Diatomaceous earth fails to give you the success you desire. However, many Pest Control techs charge high fees and you may have to use them periodically. This means you will have to spend hundreds of dollars per year if not more. If you live in a large house you may have to spend even more.
If you live in an apartment complex, inform your landlord of the bed bug problem. It is the landlord's responsibility to address this problem. If you live in an apartment complex, you may be lucky if your landlord hires a professional Pest Control tech. However, not every landlord will address this problem. In my experience, I had to solve this problem myself since my landlord ignored my complaints of bed bugs.
Why I recommend Diatomaceous earth
My personal experience is that Diatomaceous earth is the best weapon to use against instects and bed bugs. In 2012, I was living in an attic and experiencing a bed bug problem. At first, I thought these bugs where normal insects. But then came the nightmare of waking up with bite marks on my feet and legs.
My girlfriend and I went through a terrible few months. We purchased Raid insect sprays and bombed our attic with it. Of course, we would do this when we were both working, so as to not to breathe the harmful chemicals of these sprays. We also threw away our bed mattress, as it was infected with Bed Bug eggs.
I also had to throw away my bed frame. Hundreds of dollars down the drain. We purchased a new bed and within a few weeks it was infected also. The sprays would only work for a few days. Within a week we where getting bite marks again! At this point we began to complain to our landlord.
Our landlord gave us sprays but the story would repeat again and again. The sprays would only work for a few days. Our landlord promised she would hire a professional Pest Control expert, however, months passed and nothing. At this point my girlfriend and I began to look for a new apartment to live in. That's how bad our bed bug problem had become.
At this point I had lost all hope. However, my luck changed when I did some research online and found out about Diatomaceous earth. Some people online where saying that this product worked wonders against bed bugs. And the best part, no harmful chemicals and it was cheap!
I went online and I purchased a bag of Diatomaceous earth for around $15 and I received the bag within a week. I immediately began to place this white powder alongside the edges of my bed frame, underneath my mattress and in the corners of my room. Everywhere that I had seen bed bugs, I placed some of this power.
Within a few weeks, the bed bugs where gone! No more bite marks. No more blood stains on my bed sheets. No more insects harassing my girlfriend and me at 5 o clock in the morning! Boy, what a relief! It was incredible. In the previous terrible 6 months, we had spent more than $200 on bed bug sprays in vain.
But with just $15 I eliminated all the bed bugs from my home! Diatomaceous earth works! This is why I decided to share this information on this blog, so hopefully other people can learn that there is a solution to eliminating these annoying pests once and for all.
As for my story, well, my girlfriend and me continued living in that attic for another 6 months, and we moved to a new apartment. However, in those last 6 months in the attic we never saw another beg bug again. The only ones we saw where the corpses of dead bed bugs.
But we still decided to move anyway, since we didn't like the fact that our landlord ignored her responsibility of eliminating the bed bugs from her home. That wasn't right so we decided to move anyway. However, this terrible experience taught me one thing: Diatomaceous earth kills bed bugs!
Note: I only used about 10% of the powder in the bag I purchased, and that's all it took to wipe them out! I still have the bag of Diatomaceous earth with me, just in case!
How does Diatomaceous earth kill bed bugs?
Diatomaceous earth kills bed bugs by cutting their outer shell and they literally die within days. How does this process work? The powder is literally like small pieces of glass. For humans the powder is harmless when you touch it. However, bed bugs are very small insects. When bed bugs walk over the powder, their outer skeletal shell gets cut, and they dehydrate within days.
It's that simple. The key is, of course, to place the powder in or near areas where the bed bugs operate or live in. Most bed bugs live in bed mattresses, bed frames and areas near the bed. Why? Because bed bugs like to be close to their source of food. They also leave eggs in mattresses, and this is how the problem can spiral out of control very fast.
Why don't the pesticide sprays work?
The pesticide sprays do work, however, it usually does not eliminate the problem. When you spray chemicals, some bed bugs do die, but many of them hide and move away from the spray zone. They then return when the chemicals wears off. Bed bugs are tough to kill when you use chemicals.
Also, bed bugs can live up to 1 year without eating! This means, when you spray your room with chemicals, many bed bugs will simply run to your closets or move deep into the structure of your home, and then come back after the chemicals wear off. This is what happened to me when I began spraying for 6 months.
I noticed that the bed bugs where simply moving deeper into the attic where I was living in! It was like putting a band aid on a wound, but the wound would never heal. On the other hand, the Diatomaceous earth eliminated the problem completely. Why? Because without any chemicals, the bed bugs will come after the person.
They will come back to the mattress for their food supply. However, this is a death trap for them. When they return, their shells will be ripped open by the DE powder, and they will slowly dehydrate until they die. It's unfortunate that they will have to suffer a slow death. But what choice do we have? It's unsafe to live in such terrible conditions.
What about hiring a professional Pest Control Tech?
If you live in a large house or a large apartment, a Pest Control Expert is essential in eliminating long term pest problems. However, remember, these professionals usually charge very high fees. You may spend more than $1,000 hiring a professional Pest Control technician.
However, don't get me wrong, I think a Pest Control Tech is probably the best solution to eliminating any pest infestation problem. For example, the DE powder will most likely be ineffective against rodents. Flying insects will also most likely not be harmed by the white powder.
However, in my experiences, I think any person with a bed bug infestation should first try using the DE powder as a long term solution. It's cheap, it's safe and it has a good track record against bed bugs. If you try DE powder and it does not work, then go for a professional Pest Control Tech. However, you have very little to use by trying the DE powder.
My only advice is if you do decide to try the DE powder, make sure you purchase a good quality brand, and make sure you apply the powder correctly so you can maximize your chances of killing all the bed bugs. If it doesn't work, then you may have no choice but to call upon the services of a Pest Control professional.
However, as you already know, in my experience Diatomaceous Earth worked wonders. Not only did it eliminate the bed bugs, it only cost me $15 to do it!
